Known as one of the first nationally known American artist of color, Jacob Lawrence enjoyed a fifty year career as a painter. He grew up around other writers and artists in Harlem during Depression of the 1930s. Though he never completed high school, he spent hours in the library teaching himself about history and legendary black figures to use in his paintings.
